Kavarna, the coast that doesn't try to charm you

Kavarna makes no effort to polish itself for visitors, and that is exactly the point. This is a working port town on the northern stretch of the Bulgarian coast, all high cliffs, salt wind and a workaday air far removed from the tidy resorts further south. Here the sea is something you look down on from the rocks, not up at from a lounger. For anyone after the raw, maritime edge of the Dobrudzha, with fishermen, open steppe and an unlikely rock scene, the town is an honest, uncosmeticised base.

Things to do

The headline act is [Cape Kaliakra](/obiective/cape-kaliakra), a reddish spit of land reaching two kilometres out to sea beneath cliffs over 60 metres high, wrapped in a nature reserve and the legend of maidens who threw themselves off rather than face captivity. On the town's edge, [Chirakman Cape](/obiective/chirakman-cape) opens up wide views and traces of ancient settlement, while the [Historical Museum Kavarna](/obiective/historical-museum-kavarna) fills in the archaeological backstory.

• A detail you'll find nowhere else: the [Ronnie James Dio monument](/obiective/ronnie-james-dio-monument), raised after the town became, through its festivals, an improbable capital of rock and metal.
• Clifftop walks and birdwatching along the reserve trails.

Beaches

Kavarna is a town of rock rather than long sand, and its beach offer is modest. For full beach days, many commute to the coves nearby; facilities and access are approximate and best checked on the spot, especially outside high season.

This northern coast is mussel country. Getting there

The nearest airport is Varna, roughly an hour and a half by car to the south; exact distances are approximate and depend on traffic and route. Kavarna is easily reached by road from Varna or Balchik. A rental car is worth it: Cape Kaliakra, the mussel farms and the surrounding coves are hard to reach without your own wheels.

Tips

• The wind is constant on the cliffs; pack an extra layer even in summer.
