About Cape Kaliakra
Cape Kaliakra
North of Kavarna, on the Dobrudja stretch of Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, Cape Kaliakra is one of the most striking landmarks on the entire shoreline: a narrow tongue of reddish rock reaching far out to sea, edged by tall, sheer cliffs in a warm, almost rust-coloured stone. The site combines dramatic scenery with a history reaching back thousands of years, and is today a protected nature reserve.
What to see
The headland preserves the remains of a medieval fortress, with walls and gateways that once guarded the cape from the landward side. From the ridge you look out over the open Black Sea, cliffs that drop vertically to the waves, and often cormorants and other seabirds nesting in the rock. The cape is famous for the legend of 40 Bulgarian maidens who, according to tradition, tied their hair together and threw themselves into the sea rather than fall into the hands of Ottoman conquerors. The surrounding waters sometimes shelter dolphins, and the cape lies on a major bird migration route, making it a notable spot for birdwatching.
Practical information
The cape is easily reached by car from Kavarna or Balchik, on a road that runs almost to the tip, where there is parking. Spring and early autumn are the most rewarding times, when warm light brings out the colour of the rock; sunset is a favourite with photographers. Wear comfortable shoes, as the ground is stony and exposed to the wind. Nearby are the resorts of Kavarna and Balchik, with Queen Marie's palace and botanical garden, easy to combine into a day trip.
