About Park Museum „Vladislav Varnenchik“

The Park-Museum "Vladislav Varnenchik" (also known as the Park of Combat Friendship 1444) lies on the western edge of Varna, in the district that bears its name, and is one of the most significant places of historical memory on Bulgaria's northern coast. Here, in November 1444, the Battle of Varna took place – one of the last major Christian crusades against Ottoman expansion in the Balkans. The young king of Poland and Hungary, Władysław III Jagiełło, fell in the battle and was afterwards given the epithet "Varnenchik," meaning "the one from Varna." For visitors from Romania the site carries special resonance, as forces from the Romanian lands, led by John Hunyadi, took part in the crusade.

What to see The heart of the complex is a symbolic mausoleum-cenotaph raised in memory of the fallen king, set within a quiet park. The museum exhibition dedicated to the battle displays weapons, armour, maps and models that explain how the confrontation unfolded and the wider crusade context. The mood is sober and contemplative, well suited to anyone drawn to the medieval history of the Balkans.

Practical The park-museum sits in the western part of Varna and is reachable by car or by public transport from the city. A visit usually takes one to two hours and pairs well with Varna's other sights – the Sea Garden, the Archaeological Museum or the old centre. Late spring through autumn is the most pleasant time, when the park is green and the walk is relaxed. Check the museum's opening hours before you go, as they may vary out of season.
