About "Neofit Rilski" House-Museum
The Neofit Rilski House-Museum in Bansko
In the old centre of Bansko, at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, stands the house where Neofit Rilski (1793–1881) lived, one of the great figures of the Bulgarian National Revival. A monk, teacher and scholar, Neofit Rilski is regarded as a pioneer of secular Bulgarian education, author of an influential grammar and founder of one of the country's first modern schools. His birthplace, a traditional Revival-era building, is today a memorial museum.
What to see
The visit leads you through a typical 19th-century Bansko dwelling, with thick stone walls, timber rooms and the hidden spaces characteristic of the fortress-houses of that troubled period. Inside are displayed objects tied to the scholar's life and work — manuscripts, books, period furniture and accounts of his role in the growth of Bulgarian schooling. The authentic atmosphere makes the house a window onto the Bansko of old, a town of craftsmen and merchants with a strong cultural life.
Practical
The museum lies in Bansko's historic centre, easily reached on foot. Bansko, Bulgaria's leading mountain resort, is accessible by car or bus from Sofia and Blagoevgrad. The visit suits any season, being an indoor site — a good choice for a winter day between ski runs or a cultural break in summer. Nearby stand the Nikola Vaptsarov house-museum, the Holy Trinity church and the many traditional taverns (mehana). For opening hours and fees, check the information on site.
