About Baikushev's pine
Baikushev's Pine
Tucked into Pirin National Park above the resort of Bansko, Baikushev's Pine (Baykushevata mura) is one of the oldest trees in Bulgaria and a living natural monument. It is a Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii / leucodermis) estimated to be well over a thousand years old — a contemporary of the First Bulgarian State. It is named after the forester who recorded it, Konstantin Baikushev. With a 4.8 rating, it is a beloved stop for hikers.
What to see
The tree impresses with its massive trunk and a crown that has withstood centuries of high-altitude wind and snow. It stands alone, dignified, like a patriarch of the mountain forest, surrounded by Pirin's rugged beauty — a granite massif of jagged peaks, coniferous forest and glacial lakes. The spot has an almost solemn atmosphere: you are standing before a living being older than most human-made monuments in the region.
Practical
The tree lies near the Banderitsa area, along the road and trail climbing from Bansko towards Pirin's huts and routes. You reach it by car or shuttle up the forest road to a parking area, then a short walk on foot. Summer and early autumn are ideal; in winter the area is snow-covered and access depends on conditions. Combine the visit with a longer Pirin hike (the lakes, Vihren hut) or a day in Bansko. Respect national-park signage — this is a protected area.
