About "Dvoretsa" Architectural Park
The Balchik Palace and Botanical Garden
On the northern Black Sea coast, in Balchik, the complex known as "Dvoretsa" (The Palace) is one of the most romantic places on the entire Bulgarian coast. The summer residence was built in the period when the Southern Dobruja region belonged to Romania, as a retreat for Queen Marie of Romania, and it preserves a special charm, set on terraces that descend gently toward the sea.
What to see
The heart of the ensemble is the "Quiet Nest" villa, with its slender silhouette and minaret recalling the oriental and Mediterranean influences the queen loved. Around it unfold terraces, alleys, fountains, the stone throne by the seashore and the little "Stella Maris" chapel. The Botanical Garden, one of the richest in the region, holds an impressive plant collection, including a remarkable grouping of cacti and Mediterranean species, tiered on the slope with views over the sea.
Practical
The complex lies on the edge of Balchik, reachable by car or on foot along the seafront; it is a popular day trip from the nearby resorts of Albena and Golden Sands. The loveliest time is from late spring to early autumn, when the gardens are in bloom. Set aside a few hours to wander the terraces and garden at leisure. Rating 4.5.
