About Tsarkva "Sv. Nikolay"
The Church of "St. Nikolay" (St. Nicholas) is an Orthodox church in the Rila / Borovets area, at the foot of the highest mountain massif in the Balkan Peninsula. It is dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, patron of travellers and of those in danger, one of the most venerated saints in the Orthodox world. It is not a monastery but a parish / local church, and we have no confirmed data on its history or year of building — we leave that open and recommend checking on site, so as not to assert anything uncertain.
What to see and practical For the visitor, the church offers a quiet stop and an interior in the Bulgarian Orthodox tradition, with icons of St. Nicholas. It lies conveniently within the Borovets area — Bulgaria's oldest and best-known mountain resort, a starting point for Mount Musala (2,925 m) and the trails of Rila. It is an active place of worship: enter in modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) and keep quiet, especially during services. The feast of St. Nicholas (6 December) is the most significant moment of the year. Around it, Borovets offers hiking in summer and skiing in winter, while the great Rila Monastery, a UNESCO site, lies within reasonable driving distance.
