About Stob Earth Pyramids - Trailhead
The Stob Earth Pyramids (Стобски пирамиди) are one of Bulgaria's most spectacular geological formations, on the western foothills of the Rila Mountains, by the village of Stob near Kocherinovo and the famous Rila Monastery. The trailhead marks the start of the path that climbs up among these clay columns.
What to see The formations are hundreds of earth pillars and towers, shaped by erosion over thousands of years, many capped by a stone block that has protected the top. Colours range from ochre-yellow to reddish, and the tall, sharp silhouettes have inspired local legends. A maintained path climbs among the pyramids, with platforms and viewpoints opening onto wide views over the Rila river valley and the mountains.
Practical From the trailhead the climb is short but steep in places; wear shoes with good grip and bring water, especially in the heat. The best seasons are spring and autumn, when it is not too hot, and morning or late afternoon for the nicest light; avoid the trail in rain, when the clay turns slippery. Stob pairs perfectly with a visit to the nearby Rila Monastery, a UNESCO site — together they make a memorable day trip in the western Rila mountains.
