About Regional Ethnographic Museum Plovdiv
The Regional Ethnographic Museum of Plovdiv occupies one of the most striking houses in the Old Town: the Kuyumdzhioglu House, built in the mid-19th century for a wealthy merchant. With its dark-blue undulating façade, curved gable and broad eaves, the building is a textbook example of the "Plovdiv Baroque" of the Bulgarian National Revival – worth visiting for the architecture alone.
What to see Inside, the house keeps the atmosphere of a prosperous merchant's residence, with carved wooden ceilings, spacious salons and period furniture. The collections document traditional life in the Plovdiv region and Thrace: folk costumes and embroidery, musical instruments, farming and craft tools, objects tied to winemaking and tobacco, pottery and household items. A quiet courtyard behind the house makes a pleasant pause.
Practical The museum sits in the heart of Plovdiv's Old Town (Stariya grad), among cobbled hillside lanes, a short walk from other historic house-museums and the Roman Theatre. The easiest approach is on foot, climbing up from the city's pedestrian centre; the streets are steep and cobbled, so comfortable shoes help. Pair the visit with a wander through the whole historic quarter – one of the best-preserved Revival-era townscapes in the Balkans. Check current opening hours and ticket prices before you go, as they may change.
