About Clock Tower
One of the oldest clock towers in the Balkans
The Clock Tower of Plovdiv stands on Sahat Tepe, one of the city's famous hills, and is among its enduring symbols. It is regarded as one of the oldest clock towers in the Balkans and in this part of Europe, and for centuries it has marked the hours above one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on the continent. With a 4.7 rating, it is a well-loved stop both for its historic value and for its views.
What to see
The stone tower on the hilltop is a remarkable historic object in itself, but the real reward of the climb is the panorama. From Sahat Tepe wide views open over Plovdiv — the city's rooftops, its other hills and, in the distance, the surrounding landscape. It is a favourite spot for sunsets and for a quiet pause above the bustle of the city. Plovdiv itself has an extraordinary history, from its Thracian and Roman roots to the Old Town with its houses from the Bulgarian Revival period.
Practical information
The tower is in central Plovdiv, in the Thracian region, reached on foot by a short climb up the hill. Plovdiv is easy to reach by train or car, being one of Bulgaria's most important cities. The finest light for a visit is early morning or around sunset. We recommend comfortable footwear for the climb. Nearby it is well worth exploring the Old Town, the ancient Roman theatre, the Roman stadium and the pedestrian streets full of cafés — all a short distance from the hill.
