About Monument of the Red Army "Alyosha"
Alyosha is the massive Red Army monument that dominates Plovdiv from the crest of Bunardzhik Hill, also known as the Hill of the Liberators. Its towering stone soldier is visible from far away and, beyond its history, has become a much-loved landmark and viewpoint for the city.
What to see The monument depicts a Soviet soldier gazing toward the horizon and was raised in the post-war period in memory of the Soviet army. Whatever one makes of its history, today many people climb here chiefly for the sweeping panorama: from the platform at its base opens one of the finest views over Plovdiv, with the city's rooftops, the other distinctive hills, and the Thracian plain beyond. The walk itself, through the hilltop park, is a pleasant stroll among the pines.
Practical Bunardzhik is one of the hills in central Plovdiv, and the ascent is made on foot, along paths and steps rising from the city; it is not long but does involve a slope, so comfortable shoes help. The best times are sunset and clear evenings, when the city lights up beneath the monument. The site is open-air and freely accessible. Afterwards you can easily walk down toward the centre and Plovdiv's Old Town, or on to the city's other viewpoint hills.
