About Krushuna Falls
The turquoise cascades of central Bulgaria
Krushuna Falls (Krushunski vodopadi) are among the best-known natural wonders of central Bulgaria, near the village of Krushuna close to Letnitsa. Rather than a single drop, this is a series of stepped cascades flowing over travertine rock, built up over time from the mineral deposits left by the water. The result is a landscape of moss-green terraces and clear, turquoise pools that fully explains the site's popularity.
What you'll see and do
A well-made trail with wooden walkways and steps follows the water uphill, past the main cascade and through the surrounding woodland. Along the way you pass a succession of greenish-blue pools that are wonderfully photogenic. The area also has caves, and the region is appreciated for easy nature walks. The water is cold, and bathing in the pools is generally not permitted — their beauty is for looking, not swimming.
Practical notes
Krushuna lies in north-central Bulgaria and is most easily reached by car; it makes a natural stop on a regional itinerary, perhaps combined with the town of Lovech or the nearby Devetashka Cave. Wear shoes with good grip, as the walkways can be slippery after rain. It is loveliest in spring and early summer, when the flow is strong and the greens are vivid, though it is appealing in any warm season. Come early in the day for quiet and good light for photos.
