About Dokuzak Waterfall
Reviewed by Tony Denesa·Updated:
Dokuzak Waterfall lies in the heart of the Strandzha mountains, in southeastern Bulgaria, not far from the village of Stoilovo. It is one of the best-known waterfalls in this little-travelled region, hidden in a landscape of dense forest that makes Strandzha one of the wildest and best-preserved corners of the country.
What to see The water descends in steps over rocky ledges, forming a cool, shaded setting surrounded by the rich vegetation typical of Strandzha's forests. The waterfall is at its most impressive in spring and early summer, when the flow is stronger; in dry months the water drops. The area is valued for its peaceful atmosphere and untouched surroundings, a favourite for hikers and those seeking places away from the crowds.
Practical Dokuzak is most easily reached by car, from the village of Stoilovo or the town of Malko Tarnovo, followed by a short walk on a path to the falls. The most pleasant seasons are spring and autumn, when the vegetation is lush and temperatures mild. A visit can be combined with exploring Strandzha Nature Park, Bulgaria's largest protected area, renowned for its biodiversity and local traditions — among them the famous fire-dancing ritual (nestinarstvo).
