About Ancient Stadium of Philipopolis

The Ancient Stadium of Philippopolis is one of the most surprising sights in central Plovdiv: a Roman stadium lying partly hidden beneath the main pedestrian street and Dzhumaya Square. Built in the Roman era, when the city was known as Philippopolis, it hosted Greek-style athletic games and is estimated to have held tens of thousands of spectators.

What to see The most impressive visible part today is the stadium's curved end (the sphendone), with restored marble seating tiers, right beside the Dzhumaya Mosque. From here you can grasp how the long arena once ran beneath the modern pedestrian artery. Sections of the ancient structure are showcased through glass panels and interpretive displays set into the square, and at times visual presentations recreate how the stadium looked in antiquity.

Practical The stadium sits right in the heart of Plovdiv's pedestrian zone, so you come across it naturally while strolling through the centre – no need to hunt for it. The main open-air section is free to view at any time. It is close to the Roman Theatre and the Old Town, making it easy to weave into a route around the city's Roman heritage. Early morning or evening is most pleasant, when the square is quieter and the light brings out the marble.
