About Church-ossuary "Sveta Nedelya"
The "Sveta Nedelya" church-ossuary, the memory of Batak
In the town of Batak, in the Rhodope Mountains — only a few kilometres from the Tsigov Chark resort and Batak Lake — stands one of the gravest and most moving testimonies of modern Bulgarian history: the old church of "Sveta Nedelya" (Holy Sunday), now a memorial ossuary of the Batak massacre.
In April 1876, during the April Uprising against Ottoman rule, the townspeople of Batak took refuge inside this stone church, hoping for shelter. It became the scene of one of the bloodiest episodes of the reprisals — thousands of people, mostly women, children and the elderly, lost their lives. Reports by foreign journalists and diplomats shook Europe and hastened international support for the Bulgarian cause, helping pave the way to the country's liberation.
What to see
The church is today a place of remembrance. Traces and inscriptions left by those who sheltered here can still be seen on the interior walls, and the remains of the victims are kept with reverence as a memorial ossuary. The atmosphere is sober and heavy; the modest stone building speaks more through silence than through ornament. Nearby stands a history museum devoted to the uprising and local memory.
Practical
It is reached by car from Batak and the Tsigov Chark resort, easily accessible from the main road. The site is first of all a memorial and a place of contemplation — modest dress, a lowered voice and particular respect are expected, given its commemorative character. A visit pairs well with a stop at Batak Lake and the walks around Tsigov Chark. This is a place best approached with seriousness rather than as a simple tourist attraction.
