They are the two names you hear most when someone says "we're going to the Bulgarian coast": Golden Sands in the north, near Varna, and Sunny Beach (Slanchev Bryag) in the south, near Burgas. Both are large, high-volume resorts with wide beaches and a serious nightlife. But beyond their shared "party resort" reputation, the differences matter more than you'd expect — and they can make or break your trip.
Here is what actually separates them, minus the brochure clichés.
Location and access
Sunny Beach sits on Burgas Bay, just a few kilometres from the UNESCO-listed old town of Nessebar. It's the closer choice if you drive down from Romania via Varna and continue along the coast, though its reference airport is Burgas.
Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasatsi) lies north of Varna, backed by the nature park that gives it its green hinterland. It's nearer to Varna airport and to quieter neighbours like Kranevo and Albena. For a tour of the northern coast, Golden Sands is the logical base.
In short: coming from the south or via Burgas, go Sunny Beach; arriving through Varna and wanting the northern coast, go Golden Sands.
The beach
Both hold Blue Flag status and fine sand, but their character differs:
- Sunny Beach has the longest sand strip in Bulgaria — kilometres of wide, open beach with a gentle slope into the water. Great for families with small children and anyone who wants room to breathe.
- Golden Sands has a more compact beach framed by the wooded cliff behind it. The setting is more dramatic, but the sand narrows in places, especially at peak season.
Atmosphere and crowd
This is the real dividing line. Sunny Beach is the coast's party capital: big clubs, bars open until sunrise, aggressive promotions. In summer it draws a young crowd, much of it from northern Europe. It's brilliant if that's what you want — and exhausting if it isn't.
Golden Sands has nightlife too, but the tone is a touch calmer, with a more even mix of families, couples and groups. It's no monastery, but it isn't round-the-clock chaos either.
If you'd rather avoid both extremes, it's worth looking at gentler alternatives such as St. Constantine and Helena or Pomorie, which we cover separately.
Prices and accommodation
Both resorts span the full spectrum, from high-volume all-inclusive hotels to apartments and a handful of 5-star properties. As a rule of thumb, Sunny Beach offers more budget options and fiercer competition at the low end, while Golden Sands leans slightly toward families and spa-style packages. Exact prices swing a lot with season and operator — treat these as approximate and check current deals in the accommodation section.
For eating out, both have hundreds of venues of wildly varying quality, so it pays to follow our restaurants picks rather than the menu boards on the promenade.
What's nearby
- From Sunny Beach: Nessebar (minutes away), Burgas, the surrounding lakes. See our Sunny Beach vs Nessebar comparison if you're torn between the resort and the old town.
- From Golden Sands: Varna (museums, sea garden), the rock-hewn Aladzha Monastery, the nature-park villages.
The verdict
- Choose Sunny Beach for the longest beach, maximum nightlife, aggressive pricing and easy access to Nessebar and Burgas.
- Choose Golden Sands for a greener setting, a more balanced crowd and the ideal base for the northern coast, close to Varna, Albena and Kranevo.
Neither is "better" in the absolute. It's about the kind of holiday you're after.
FAQ
Which resort is better for families with children? Both work, but Sunny Beach's wide, gently sloping beach is a clear plus for young kids. Golden Sands makes up for it with greenery and a slightly calmer crowd. For real quiet, consider Albena or St. Constantine and Helena instead.
Where is the nightlife more intense? Sunny Beach, without question — it's the main party destination on the Bulgarian coast. Golden Sands has clubs and bars, but at a lower intensity.
Which is closer to the airport? Golden Sands is near Varna airport, Sunny Beach near Burgas airport. Pick based on your flight or driving route.
Is it worth combining both in one trip? Yes, they're a few hours apart along the coast. A Varna–Burgas road trip lets you see both plus the old towns in between. Check our destination guides for a sensible route.
