About Tsarevets Fortress
Bulgaria's medieval heart
Tsarevets Fortress rises on a horseshoe-shaped hill, almost entirely encircled by the Yantra River, in the centre of Veliko Tarnovo. It was the fortified seat and power centre of the Second Bulgarian Empire (12th–14th centuries), when Tarnovo served as the capital and one of the most important political, spiritual and cultural hubs in south-eastern Europe. Anyone with an interest in Balkan medieval history should not miss it — it is, without exaggeration, one of the most striking historical sites in the country.
What you'll see
Climbing the fortified path, you reach the remains of the defensive walls, towers and gates that once guarded the royal palace and the patriarchal complex. At the highest point stands the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension, rebuilt in the 20th century and decorated inside with bold, unconventional modern frescoes by a Bulgarian artist. From the summit you get sweeping views over the tiered town, the looping Yantra River and the surrounding hills. You can also trace the foundations of the royal palace and the so-called Baldwin's Tower, linked to the Latin emperor said to have been held captive here.
Practical notes
Tsarevets sits right in Veliko Tarnovo, a town well connected by road and rail to Sofia, Plovdiv and the coast; the fortress is just a few minutes' walk from the old centre. Allow at least one to two hours — the ground is steep, so wear comfortable shoes. Early morning or sunset is loveliest, when warm light catches the walls. On selected evenings a sound-and-light show is projected onto the fortress. Nearby, the Samovodska Charshia craft quarter and the museum-village of Arbanasi are well worth adding to your day.
