About Pobiti Kamani Rock Formations (Stone Forest)
West of Varna, in the dry plain that leads inland, hundreds of stone columns rise from the sand like the remains of a petrified forest. This is Pobiti Kamani — the "Stone Forest" or "driven stones" — one of Bulgaria's most unusual natural phenomena and a protected site. The columns, many of them cylindrical and hollow, reach several metres in height and are scattered across several clusters in an arid, almost desert-like setting.
What to see The origin of the formations is still debated by geologists — both organic and inorganic explanations have been proposed — which adds a layer of mystery to the place. You can wander among the columns, touch them and photograph them; morning and evening light best brings out their textures and long shadows. The sandy ground and sparse steppe vegetation make the landscape feel like it belongs to another continent. It is also a popular spot for a short, reflective stop away from the busy coast.
Practical Pobiti Kamani lies a short distance from Varna, beside the road running inland; it is most easily reached by car, but can also be included in organised tours from the northern coast. In summer the open plain is very sunny and hot — bring water, a hat and comfortable footwear, as you will be walking on sand. Spring and autumn offer milder temperatures. Combine the visit with Varna's sights (the city museums, the seafront and the casino in the Sea Garden) for a full day out.
