About Marvelous Bridges
The Marvelous Bridges (Chudnite Mostove) are among the most striking natural formations in the Rhodope Mountains, hidden in a forested valley of the Western Rhodopes, not far from Chepelare and Asenovgrad. They are rock arches carved by water through marble bedrock over hundreds of thousands of years: a river that once flowed through a cave hollowed out galleries, and over time the ceilings collapsed, leaving these dramatic natural "bridges" standing above the streambed.
What to see The largest arch rises a considerable height above the water and can be crossed on top while the cold stream runs beneath it. Further down the valley lies a second, smaller and wilder bridge, where the water partly disappears underground. The surrounding coniferous forest, the cool air and the echo of running water give the place an almost mythical atmosphere — fittingly, it is wrapped in local legends. For nature lovers, the area offers short walking trails and viewpoints over the formations.
Practical The easiest way to get here is by car, on mountain roads climbing up from the Chepelare area; the final stretch is narrow and winding, so drive carefully. The best season is late spring through autumn, when the weather is settled; in winter access can be difficult due to snow. Wear comfortable, non-slip footwear — the rocks can be wet and slippery. Nearby you'll find the mountain resort of Pamporovo and the town of Chepelare, both good bases for a day exploring the Rhodopes. With a 4.8 rating, it's a memorable stop for anyone travelling through the heart of the Bulgarian mountains.
