About Belogradchѝshkite skali
The Belogradchik Rocks
A sweep of rust-red rock rising out of the forests of northwestern Bulgaria, around the town of Belogradchik. They are among the country's best-known natural formations: pillars, towers and rock silhouettes carved over millions of years by wind and water. Stretching for several kilometers, they form an almost theatrical landscape, which is why locals and many visitors count them among Bulgaria's natural wonders. The 4.9 rating reflects the impression they leave.
What you'll see
Many of the rocks carry names drawn from legend — shapes in which the imagination reads a monk, a maiden, animals or faces. The most dramatic formations stand right beside and within Belogradchik Fortress, which uses the rocks as natural walls, so the two sights are usually visited together. Viewpoints and trails climb among the columns, giving a different perspective at every turn.
Practical
Belogradchik sits in the country's far northwest, reached by car from Vidin or, on a longer route, from Sofia. The best light for photographs is early morning and evening, when the rock turns a deep orange. Combine the visit with the fortress and, if time allows, the nearby Magura Cave. Wear comfortable footwear for the stony paths and take care in wet weather.
